The Hidden Risks of Imported Puppies

Did you know? Nearly 1 in 10 puppies bought in the UK during the pandemic came from overseas—and many carried hidden health risks. A new study of over 7,000 dog owners reveals big gaps in public knowledge about puppy imports, exotic diseases, and even what an EU Pet Passport really means. Here’s what every pet owner should know:

1. An EU Pet Passport ≠ a Clean Bill of Health

Many people believe a Pet Passport means a puppy is fully vaccinated or disease-free. Not true! It only confirms rabies vaccination. Puppies may still lack other core shots and could carry serious infections.

2. Puppies Are Often Imported Too Young

Legally, puppies must be at least 15 weeks old to be imported into the UK. Yet, almost half of puppies sold with EU passports in 2021 were only 7–8 weeks old—making their importation illegal. These pups face higher welfare risks and may not have strong immunity.

3. Exotic Diseases Could Spread to Local Dogs (and People)

Imported dogs have been found carrying dangerous diseases like Brucella canis, leishmaniasis, and heartworm. Some of these can spread to other pets—and even to humans. Worryingly, most UK owners in the study had never heard of many of these diseases.

The Bigger Picture

Buying an imported puppy might seem harmless, but it can fuel the illegal puppy trade and introduce serious diseases. Better awareness and careful choices can protect both pets and people.
